Match Report:

Julián Alvarez was the hero for Atletico Madrid, scoring twice in the second half to give his team a 5-2 win over Real Madrid, ending their unbeaten run in the 2025-2026 La Liga season.

Atletico took the lead in the 14th minute, with Robin Le Normand scoring a powerful header from a Giuliano Simeone cross. However, Real Madrid responded well. In the 25th minute, Kylian Mbappé capitalized on a brilliant through ball from Arda Güler, calmly finishing past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak to make it 1-1.

The game took another turn in the 36th minute when Arda Güler scored a stunning half-volley, set up by Vinicius Jr., putting Madrid in front 2-1. Atletico came close to equalizing, but Clement Lenglet's header from a corner was ruled out for a handball.

The hosts found their equalizer just before halftime. A well-placed cross from Alvarez found Alexander Sørloth, who headed it into the net, leaving Courtois stranded at the 48th minute, and the score was now 2-2.

In the 51st minute, Atletico were awarded a penalty after Nicolas Gonzalez was caught in the face by Güler's high boot. Alvarez made no mistake from the spot, converting to give Atletico a 3-2 lead.

The Argentine continued his brilliant performance in the 63rd minute, with a magnificent free-kick from distance, extending Atletico’s lead to 4-2. Despite Madrid’s attempts to mount a comeback, Antoine Griezmann sealed the victory for Atletico in injury time, scoring a fifth goal on the counter-attack.

Data Debrief: Alvarez's Dead-Ball Prowess Decisive

Atletico’s offensive display was clinical, registering 2.31 expected goals (xG), while Real Madrid only managed 0.58 xG. Atletico also led the shot count with 13 attempts, compared to just 6 from Madrid.

Alvarez’s performance was the highlight of the match. After scoring a midweek hat-trick against Rayo Vallecano, the forward continued his fine form, scoring both a penalty and a free-kick. Alvarez became just the second Atletico player this century to score both a penalty and a free-kick in a single La Liga match, after Luis Suarez in 2021.
